How Does SLM 3D Printing Work?

Digital Design

The SLM 3D printing process begins with curating a 3D digital model of the desired object. This particular digital model is created using computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Slicing

The 3D digital model is sliced into thin cross-sectional layers by specialized slicing software. Each layer's information is then sent to the SLM machine for printing.

Material Preparation

Metal powder is used as the raw material for SLM. The specific metal powder depends on the desired properties of the final product. Common materials include aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, and nickel alloys.

Printing Setup

A thin layer of metal powder is evenly distributed on the build platform within the SLM machine. The build platform is then lowered to the height of one layer.

Laser Melting

A high-powered laser beam scans the cross-section of the object according to the information from the sliced model. The laser selectively melts and fuses the metal powder at specific points, solidifying one layer of the object.

Layer-by-Layer Building

After each layer is finished, the build platform is lowered and a new coating of metal powder is applied on top. The laser then sinters or melts the powder, forming the next layer. This technique is repeated until the entire thing is built up layer by layer.

Cooling and Support Structures

As the layers are built, the melted metal fuses with the previous layers. Support structures may also be included in the design to prevent overhangs and provide stability during printing. These supports are typically made of the same material and are removed later.
