How Does 3D Printing Work?

The 3d printing process has three major steps — 3D model designing, slicing, and then finally printing the object.

3D Designing

The first step involved in additive manufacturing is 3d modelling. To maximize the design precision, 3D CAD modelling software is used for preparing the models. CAD is used to prepare highly intricate models that are all set to be printed.

Slicing

Once the 3d model is ready, slicing software will ‘slice’ the 3d model layer by layer. The software then scans each layer of the 3d model. Once the process is done, it will instruct the 3D printer head how to move in specific manners.

3D Printing

Once the 3d modelling and slicing are done, the 3d printers begin to print the designs. The 3d printer follows the instructions and the nozzle moves back and forth while ejecting the 3d material. The printing is done in a layering fashion.

Types of 3D Printing Technologies

KARV automation brings in the entire range of 3d printing solutions to cater to your all requirements. Following are some of the popular 3d printing technologies:

Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM)

FDM 3D Printing

In FDM, the object is made by selectively depositing melted materials as per the 3d CAD file. This process utilized thermoplastic polymers, and FDM is ideal for small batch production. PLA, ABS, Nylon 6 are some of the most popular materials used in this 3D printing technology. It’s an ideal technology for affordable rapid prototyping.

PolyJet Printing

Polyjet 3D Printing

This process builds solid objects by jetting photopolymer droplets onto a build platform. A UV light then solidifies the object. Polyjet offers high-accuracy printing, and it’s suitable for high-quality prototypes with an accuracy of 0.014 mm. Popular materials used in PolyJet 3d printing are Basic Vero (white/black), VeroClear (Transparent), and Agilus30.

Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS)

DMLS 3D Printing

It is a powerful metal 3d printing technology, and this process is used for manufacturing high-quality and lightweight parts. DMLS offers 3d printing of complex geometries with an accuracy of 0.076mm. Common materials used in DMLS are Stainless Steel 316L, Titanium, MS1 Steel. DMLS is a robust industrial printing service that can create durable & complex parts.

Stereolithography (SLA)

Stereolithography (SLA) 3D Printing

With the SLA printing process, objects are made by selectively curing a polymer leveraging a strong UV laser. This printing uses photosensitive thermoset polymers, and SLA is ideal for building parts with high dimensional accuracy of ± 0.10 mm. Some widely employed SLA printing materials are acuura25, ABS resin plastic, and white soft resin.

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

SLS 3D Printing

In SLA printing process, granules of materials are infused using a powerful laser to create a solid object. SLS is ideal for prototypes and functional 3d printed parts. SLS offers a dimension accuracy of ± 0.1mm. SLS 3d printing technology leverages materials like glass-filled nylon PA3200, Flexible PEBA 2301 Plastics.

Importance of 3D Printing Solutions in Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 is about digitizing and automating industrial processes, and additive manufacturing will act as a catalyst for companies. As it is an on-demand manufacturing technology, companies can reduce their lead times and cost-effectively work with more complex geometries. 3D printing services will completely disrupt production companies' work and allow business owners to do more in less time and budget.

In Industry 4.0, integrating 3D printing solutions is becoming increasingly important. The manufacturing process has been transformed by 3D printing, as it allows for the creation of intricate shapes and personalized components. It allows for faster prototyping, reduced lead times, and the ability to produce small batches of products economically. Additionally, 3D printing enables companies to reduce waste and cut production costs by eliminating the need for assembly lines and tooling. 3D printing is a crucial component of Industry 4.0 and is expected to transform the manufacturing industry in the coming years.

What is 3D Printing?

3d printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a method for manufacturing 3D solid objects from a digital file. The manufacturing is done in an additive manner in which the printer lays down successive material layers until the product is complete. 3d printing is an advanced method that can produce highly intricate geometries with higher accuracy. As the material wastage is lower, 3d printing solutions are more cost-optimized.

Advantages of 3D Printing

  • Faster turnaround time in manufacturing
  • Supports complex geometries and intricate 3d printing designs building
  • 3D printing offers higher accuracy and durability
  • On-demand product manufacturing
  • Highly-scalable as compared to the traditional process
